Our anchorage in great kills harbour Staten Island NY

Tues 11 SEP 2012

New York to Cape May NJ, departed Great Kills harbour for overnight trip down the New Jersey Coast on the Atlantic Ocean.  All in all the voyage was uneventful, calm seas little wind so we “motor sailed” maintaining 5 knots to plan arrival in Cape May early morning on an incoming tide...

Wed 12 Sep 0720 hrs entered Cape May harbour! Success,  a long voyage 2 hours on, 2 hours off for 20 hours.  Anchored astern S/V Mezzaluna, & went to bed for a much deserved rest.

After resting we provisioned, updated our chart plotter with a new chip. Met up with the crews of S/V Mezzaluna & Dog Gone for a quick cocktail, then off to dinner ashore (boater style) take out & eat on the restaurant premises all self serve.  

Thursday was beach day......

Friday 14 SEP, departed Cape May for journey up Delaware Bay to C& D Canal linking Delaware Bay & Chesapeake Bay, anchored in Cohansey River, then completed the trip on Sat

Sat 15 SEP, Entered the Chesapeake & anchored for 2 nights in the Bohemian River

Monday 17 SEP, We are currently sitting at a mooring in Georgetown Maryland, a quiet little out of the way place on the east shore of the Chesapeake. Weather has turned nasty but we are in a very protected location, to wait for the next couple of days.

If our updates seem to be overdue, be patient, cruising has become a full time job & wifi is very spotty.

Rest assured that we are keeping safe and loving every minute of this...

21 AUG - 09 SEP 2012

Well it’s been a while since we had any real time or location to make use of the internet, so I’ll try to catch up...

21 Aug found us at Brewerton NY, just on the west side of Lake Onieda, weather was poor so we took advantage of the public library 2 mins walk from the boat to address computer issues! Seems that our laptop decided to go to sleep & refused to wake up, thankfully the library had several extra computers 7 reference books & after 4 hours I had the laptop up & running.

22 Aug: Departed Brewerton & stopped at lock 20 a beautiful state park (free), from there it was on to Little Falls NY, a nice town and inexpensive town dock ($1.oo/ft).

23 AUG: Departed Little Falls & tied up next to lock 9. The devastation of locks 8, 9,10 from last year’s hurricane related floods was unreal!!!  The repair work will continue for years to come...

24 AUG: completed the last 8 locks & arrived in Waterford NY, at the junction of the Hudson river, Erie & Champlain canals. While checking in I was approached by a man who recognized our boat as a Prout, since he is a Prout owner himself, in fact he owns Monique’s Father’s first Prout, Chenoa!!!!!!!

We accompanied Richard for an afternoon beer & snack with excellent conversation. He then offered us the use of his dock south of Albany  (more later on that night).

We spent the next 2 days exploring & enjoying Waterford, they really know how to cater to visiting boats!

Sat 25 AUG:  we met 3 other boats heading south, that we had been playing hopscotch with:

S/V Mezzaluna with Jeff & Kate from Wisconsin

S/V Dog Gone, with Jim & Beth, also from Wisconsin

S/V Pendragon, Scott & Jennifer from Portland Oregon (just kidding they are also from Wisconsin)

 26 AUG:  Sunday before we left we were treated to a Farmer’s Market on the pier right above our boat, complete with live music...

After exiting the Troy lock it southbound down the Hudson & a night courtesy of Captain Richard Powell & family.

26 AUG, woke to an invitation to breakfast at the Powell residence, complete with homemade crepes from Richard’s mother-in-law Collette. What a wonderful gesture and MERCI Collette, Danielle et famille.

Onward south we anchored then made Catskill on the 28^th in preparation to step the mast.

29 AUG MAST STEPPED! Many thanks to Sean & Tim @ Hop-O-Nose for a job well done, no panic, no  rush, pure joy to work with.

From Caskill it was 2 more leisurely days to New York City.

03 SEP picked up a mooring in Great Kills Harbour on Staten Island, courtesy of the Richmond County Yacht Club, a very clean & pleasant club. Advise on travel to the city was fantastic. So Tues we headed to the city via train, Staten Island Ferry & of course the NY subway...WOW is the only way to describe that day!
